A pedestrian was critically injured when he was struck by a car in Berkeley on Tuesday night, a Berkeley police spokeswoman said.

At 8:23 p.m., police received a report that a person had been hit near the intersection of 10th Street and University Avenue, spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said.

The male pedestrian was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition this morning, Coats said.

She said the driver of the car involved is cooperating with investigators, who are looking into whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call the Berkeley Police Department's traffic bureau at (510) 981-5980.
